Food Review

Kenny’s Delight: Nyonya Food

Warning: Long post ahead with food.

It’s my first time to attend a review on invitation alone. XD Before this, I used to go food review with my mentor (Jasonmumbles) or I went and reviewed myself without invitation (self-invite) Hahaha

Do you know this two? Yes, they are the famous duo from Baba Nyonya show and Nasi Lemak 2.0. The one on the right is Kenny Chan who happens to be the Main Chef and Owner of the nyonya restaurant, Kenny’s Delight I’m visiting.

It’s an awesome chance for me to meet a celebrity especially one I grew up watching.

So last weekend, I grabbed a non blogger friend of mine who happened to stay nearby the restaurant to go with me. Usually, people will go and greet the owner before hand but the inexperienced me went there, sat down and ordered like everyone else. XD It could be both a good and bad move to do.

Bad as the owner/chef might have already prepare something special for you, a new dish to try or something. The good is you can taste something everyone else is tasting.

Here’s what we ordered…

The Nyonya Cendol is good. The cendol gave a very nice chewy experience, not as hard as those conventional cendols found elsewhere and I like the small mushy red bean very much. It kinda reminds me of the Cendol in Kuching and the one here do not comes with Gula Melaka too which usually overkill the great coconut milk taste.

Next, we had…

I heard from the Malaccan friend that this is a very traditional Nyonya dish/dessert. It’s a type of rice noodle served with sugar water. Initially, I thought it might turned out to be very sweet but to my surprise it’s not which is good. (I’m not a sweet loving person). The only taste comes from the pink/white rice noodles.

I ordered the Nyonya Laksa as it is a  famous nyonya dish. At first, I thought it to be Asam Laksa like the one in Jonker street but turned out it was Lemak Laksa, a variant of Curry Laksa. My friend told me this is the real Nyonya Laksa and the Asam Laksa is more of a Penang Laksa.

The laksa was served with sliced eggs, boiled egg and fried prawns. Yep, fried prawns. The prawns were fried before served, it’s so crispy, I actually ate it with its shell. Then I took the first sip of the soup/gravy. It was soo rich with coconut milk. It’s like…

hahaha okay abit over but really it was rich.

I ordered my laksa with Bee Hoon which is a bad decision as the Bee Hoon (Rice Vermicelli) soaked up all the gravy and I became bloated after only eaten half bowl. Word of advice: Do not order this with Cendol. It might be too much coconut milk for one to handle.

I think it would be nice if they can have another option of thick Bee Hoon other than thin Bee Hoon and yellow noodle. The one that doesn’t soak up the gravy too much. Then again, that would turned out to be not original. ^^”

My friend in the other hand ordered this…

Okay.. Mee Siam.. they all taste alike

that’s what I thought..

but… This is really really good!!! *cross my fluffy heart*

I tried quite a lot of Mee Siam from around Melaka over the years here and they all tasted almost the same; dead sweet, sour and a bit spicy. The Mee Siam here is very different, there’s this bean paste flavor in it. It gave another level of taste to it. A must order if you’re here!!  😀 My friend who can never finished a plate of rice actually finished the whole plate. @@

Siamese Beans Kap!!!

After our meal, I went and greet the Chef, Mr Kenny Chan himself. He was so surprised to found out I already ordered and finished eating. Hahaha… He actually thought of preparing something special like for me to try. I felt kinda bad after hearing that. ^^”

Then, he asked us to try this Rendang Chicken, a new dish that yet to be in the menu. I accepted the offer since he said it’s gonna be a small portion but turned out to be a full plate of..

Nevertheless, we tried it…and..

it was my-image-and-word-indescribable especially the Rendang Chicken.

The moment we scooped the Rendang and put in our mouth. We paused and looked at each other with a smile and kept nodding our heads. XD hahaha..the scene was very funny.

And the next thing we know, we already emptied the whole plate despite the fact I was bloated earlier from the Laksa and my friend had a very small tummy to begin with. XD

I do not know how to describe the taste. It was just there, right at the spot. Even now, my friend kept bugging me to bring her go there again for the Rendang. ^^” Let’s just hope Mr Kenny will faster include this Rendang Chicken dish in his menu. XD

. . . .

Oh in case, you wanna try this restaurant, the info is all here, Kenny’s Delight. They currently situated at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho (a.k.a. Jalan Panjang) somewhere near Bukit Cina or the Hang Li Po’s Well area. MAP.

No worries if you have problem finding them as the restaurant will move to Melaka Raya (right opposite Library Pub) in end of March under the name, Big Nyonya.

Do keep an eye for it ^^

Oh here’s a picture of Mr Kenny Chan himself (not in Nyonya costume) and someone I asked to pretend to be me.

Oh, remember the video I share earlier? It seems like there’s a sequel or second trailer to it O_o

Seri Nyonya, Hotel Equatorial Melaka

Seri Nyonya

Few Saturdays back, the PR manager from Equatorial Hotel Melaka called Jasonmumbles up and invited him for a food tasting at Seri Nyonya, an award winning Nyonya restaurant which is located right inside  Equatorial Hotel itself.  This time he was asked to invite some others bloggers to go with him and I happened to be one of them. ^^

Seri Nyonya-1

We were given a bowl of peanuts while waiting for the food.  At the mean time, the PR manager, Chris briefed us about the restaurant and the Nyonya chef who is behind it. It appeared that the Chef is a real Peranakan and prepares all her dishes like how she did it at home to preserve the originality of the taste.

After a while, the food is ready and served. Here are the dishes we had that day.

P/S: I did not had my camera that day, so all the credits for the photos goes to Jasonmumbles.

serinyonya7

Asam boi with Lychee: – A nice sour drink to open up the appetite with some lychees to chew at. My first time to have semboi drink with lychee. Something strange but nice. 😛

Otak-otak: – Personally I like this more than Muar Otak-Otak, I never did like Muar’s otak-otak unless I can regrilled them myself. Anyway, its quite good and taste a bit different from others. From what I heard, the Chef made everything from scratch. Original! 😀

Popiah:- Like how Jasonmumbles said there’s something missing in the Popiah.

Sop Hee Peow:- A soup made out dried fish bladder, mixed vegatables, fish balls and eggs. No comment on the soup tho as I didn’t manage to have a bowl of it. T___T They forgot about my portion.

Cincaluk Omelette:- I never had this before back in Kuching. I guess its either a Nyonya dish or a Melaka local dish.

Deep Fried Fish Fillet:- Wooohoo I like this! I like fried stuffs. Some more its fish!! 😛 nice~~~

Ayam Buah Keluak: – I think this is not a dish anyone can handle. The chicken meat was okay but the Buah Keluak tasted weird, nothing like what I tasted before. I was told the preparation of this dish is not easy as the Buah Keluak (Black Nuts) is a poisonous fruit to begin with and the chef need days to remove the poison from it. And I would like to apologize here for not finishing the dish that took so much work to make. 🙁

Mixed Vegetables:- The cat don’t eat vege. Nuff say. Lalalalala~~ *dance*

serinyonya15

PongTeh Chicken:- A must have dish, the Pongteh chicken.  Not bad I would say but I prefer it to be thicker and more gravvy but Jason begs different. 😛

serinyonya10

Lemak Nanas Prawn:- This is the win!! Oh.. I just love this dish a lot!! I just love the thick milk taste with every slurp taken followed with a bit of spicyness in it. Woohoo.. Nice~~ Not forgetting the fresh prawns~~ Aww.. I’m missing it already. *tears*

Cendol:-As for dessert, we had cendols but it didn’t turn out good. It lacked a bit of coconut milk in my opinion.

Seri Nyonya-2

I’m not really a proffesional in this field like JasonMumbles but overall it was nice and with a some changes it can be better .  Neither less it was a satisfy lunch. 🙂 I would like to thanks both Jason and Equatorial Hotel for it!! By the way, please visit Jason’s post for a better review of it.

Seri Nyonya-3

I had another round of lunch after that as someone happened to be in Melaka that day. Hehehe
